Napkins

I had this girl for awhile-   real classy
whenever we went out to eat
she would always put a napkin on her lap,
regardless of where we were.

                I didn’t always do this
and I felt the need to explain to her that
as a child, I noticed
that at certain restaurants
the napkin placement mores were different.
that the restaurants who wrapped their
knives and forks and spoons
in paper napkins
did not require you to put them on your lap.

and this is why                     some twenty years later
I still only place cloth napkins across my legs.

she cocked her head,
shrugging her eyes and shoulders, saying

“I always thought it was just
so that you didn’t spill on your pants.”

and forty minutes later
after a combination of soy and wasabi
would not brush off of the inside of my thigh,

                                I understood her
                a lot better.
